About Whiskey Island Design

About the Name

Whiskey Island is a small peninsula on the west side of Cleveland, Ohio, near where the Cuyahoga River empties into Lake Erie. The first resident of Cleveland, Lorenzo Carter, had a “farm” on this land, where he built a whiskey still, giving the area its name.

As the Irish moved into Cleveland for work, they settled on Whiskey Island and formed shanty towns, bringing with them 13 saloons. This, of course, only solidified the nickname for the area. Today Whiskey Island is no longer a shanty town, but a park and marina.

I chose the name Whiskey Island Design because I’m Irish American and live on the west side of Cleveland. I can’t think of another name that’s as evocative, while also giving a nod to both my heritage and my adopted home.

About the Designer

I’m a twenty-something designer, originally from Columbus, Ohio. I studied digital art and multimedia at Bowling Green State University, where I earned an undergraduate degree in photojournalism and a Master of Fine Arts in digital art. When I’m not designing websites, I’m creating art, writing, or spending time with friends and family “offline”.
